As you all know, it is a very important topic for Govt. job exams like UPSC, SSC CGL et al. In this post, I shall discuss a few key features of Indian Constitution.

  1. The Constitution of India has 448 articles in 25 parts.
  2. Apart from the articles, there are twelve schedules and five appendices.
  3. At the time of commencement, the constitution had 395 articles and 8 schedules.
  4. Article is the smallest unit. Numbers are assigned to articles.
  5. Schedules are addendum at the end of the Constitution that may further add to the associated article or describe that particular article.
  6. An uppercase letter suffixed to a number, for example, 21A makes it an independent Article whereas a lowercase letter like Art 116(a) is a section of the Article 116, not an independent Article.
  7. There are 100 amendments to the Indian Constitution since its inception. The last one came was enforced on 1st August, 2015. This deals with exchange of enclave territories with Bangladesh and conferment of citizenship rights to the residents of enclave.
  8.  There can be two types of amendments to the Indian Constitution. This is governed by Article 368.
