Environment and Ecology 1

In this post, I shall discuss a few basic terms related to Environment and Ecology. As you all know, this subject is getting much importance now a days. Almost every job exam right from clerical cadre recruitment of IBPS to UPSC to SSC CGL contains some questions on this topic.

Biodegradable : This refers to materials that can disintegrated by bacteria, fungi or any other biological means. In general, biodegradable materials are organic materials that serve as nutrient to microorganisms.

Examples : Paper towels, newspaper, cardboard box etc.

Biome :  It is a collection of plants and animals having common characteristics because of similar climates. It can be found over a vast range of a geographical location.

Biosphere : This refers to all the living matters on this planet.

Ecology : Ecology is the subject that deals with how organisms interact with their environments.

Ecosystem : This refers to the system consisting of interacting organisms and biotopes(non-living things) in a specific environment.

El Nino : In Spanish, this word means "the little boy". It is an environmental phenomenon in which appearance of unusual warm water is observed in the Pacific ocean, especially in South America. This is irregular and complex in nature and has a deep impact on weather patterns and marine fisheries around the world.

Population Bottleneck : This refers to a rapid reduction in population. This can happen either due to environmental conditions such as drought, earthquake etc or by human activities such as genocide.
